Unusual Causes Of Lower Back Pain

Unusual Causes Of Lower Back Pain

Lower back pain is a condition where pain from the lower back radiates from the lumbar region to the sides and even as far as the hips. There are many different causes of lower back pain which are actually very evident. There are also some causes of lower back pain that are totally unexpected for some people.

Stress

Stress is can cause lower back pain. This may not seem unusual to some people but the stress here does not mean physical pressure to the bones, although, physical pressure to the bones is included in the causes of lower back pain. Physical pressure in the form of stress and injuries can cause fractures or fissures in the bones, which in turn can be painful. The spine makes up a lot of support for the body so any fractures here can be translated to back pain.

Mental stress and emotional stress are some of the unusual causes of lower back pain. A person who is stressed mentally or emotionally may have tight muscles due to a reaction that the body has to turmoil and anxiety. These tight muscles can be the causes of lower back pain because they will eventually feel the strain of being too wound up and stressed out. Muscle at the back, specifically the lower back, are often affected by mental stress because a person usually holds himself up with back muscles. Dejection and a feeling of wanting to slump can cause pressure in the lower back.

Other unusual causes of lower back pain are improper posture and prolonged state of immobility. Posture is helpful in keeping our body in shape. Our framework and muscles are supposed to function in a certain way and not following the right way posture can be detrimental to the health. Prolonged standing, sitting and lying down can also be the causes of lower back pain. Physical pressure or stress is one of the causes of lower back pain.

Another form of physical stress is moving your spine or body in ways that it is not designed to. This cause of lower back pain is something that can be seen in golfers because golfers swing is something that should not be done frequently by people.

These unusual causes of lower back pain are very real and do happen to real people. Some people are affected differently by the different causes of lower back pain. The degree of pain and discomfort are also different.

Causes of Chronic Low Back Pain

Low back pain is a very common and sometimes debilitating condition that affects up to 80 % of the population. Most patients that develop the acute onset of low back pain will able to return to normal activities of daily living and become a functional member of society within 6 weeks of onset. Yet, a small percentage of the population can go on to suffer with chronic disabling lumbar pain.

Despite many scientific advances in medicine over the decades, improvement in the quality of healthcare and the proliferation of various new pharmaceuticals, controlling chronic low back pain can be difficult but not impossible. Surgical solutions for treating low back pain is difficult and often met with mixed results and should be the very last option.

Causes of Chronic Low Back Pain

The causes of chronic lumbar pain are many and can include one or a few of the problems listed below in combination, and the causes are not limited to this list:

Degenerative Arthritis: This is the most common cause in adults, and is consistent with the normal wear and tear process to the lumbar spine.

Other types of arthropathies: There are a number of conditions which fall under this section such as Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Diffuse Idiopathic skeletal Hyperostosis(DISH), Lupus, Ankylosing Spondylosis or other HLA-B27 conditions.

Fibromyalgia: Disease of disuse and muscle deconditioning.

Stress: This could be either emotional or social stressors which can lead to lumbar pain via muscle spasm.

Fractures: This can be as a result of any significant trauma such as a motor vehicle accident.

Muscle Strains: The most common cause as a result of work-related injuries lifting injuries or other types of other trauma.

Herniated Disc: Disruption of the disc that separates two vertebra that results in nerve root compression.

Spinal Stenosis: Compression of the spinal nerves secondary to naturally progressive age related arthritis.

Infection: Bacterial or fungal infection of the spine.

Cancer

Intra-abdominal or pelvic organ pathology: Kidney, pancreas, and aorta problems as well as others can mimic symptoms consistent with traditional lower back pain.

It is because the majority of lower back pain in our society is caused by muscle strain or arthritis, and the frequency is so common, that a delay or missed diagnosis of underlying rare conditions, such as but not limited to fractures, cancer, infection, renal stones, and aortic aneurysms, can occur.

What are the Predisposing Factors for Chronic Lower Back Pain?

There are a number of predisposing factors that can increase a patient's chances of having back issues. Problems such as smoking, alcoholism, obesity, low physical activity, psychosocial issues, sedentary jobs, prior failed back surgery, secondary gain, and deconditioning can all increase a patient's chances of developing or maintaining chronic lower back pain.

As it relates to treatment for lower back pain, it is fortunate that the vast majority of patients will have complete resolution of their pain within six to eight weeks of acute onset. The prevalence of lower back issues in our society persisting longer than two weeks is approximately 14%, with a point prevalence of approximately 7% (Deyo, R. A. 1990).

Treatment

The active treatment of lower back pain has two main focuses, the first of which should always be non-operative care. This should include physical therapy, chiropractic, anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxants, limited use of narcotics, various injections (both diagnostic and therapeutic), weight loss, smoking cessation, muscle reconditioning, and the tincture of time.

As it relates specifically to aerobic exercise, fitness creates an overall protective effect on the spine by increasing muscle strength, endurance, and increasing endorphin levels. This can lead to avoiding conditions such as fibromyalgia, which is a disease of disuse.

The other generalized treatment algorithm may include surgery. It is known that surgical intervention for predominant low back pain typically does not result in excellent long-term results.

Surgical fusion has been met with mixed results for the treatment of predominant low back pain and decompression has a very limited role.

Artificial Disc Replacement (ADR) is showing some significant promise in the treatment of low back pain as well as artificial nucleus. Research is still ongoing as it relates to artificial nucleus replacement, yet artificial disk replacement is available and is no longer experimental as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has completed the initial research and approved ADR for human use since 2003. In Europe, artificial disk replacement has been an approved (CE mark) treatment for over 20 years.

Any patient that is considering treatment for chronic, disabling, low back pain should seek the advice of their primary care physician first and address many of the risk factors that have been outlined above.

Surgical intervention for chronic low back pain is not common, but evaluation by a spinal surgery specialist would be an important step to take if you, as a patient, have remained symptomatic, despite the conservative course, for longer than 6 to 8 weeks.

Back Pain Causes and Treatments

Back pain can be caused by any one of a number of reasons. It can be caused by excessive exercise, bad posture, strain or muscle spasms. In more severe cases, it can be caused by fractured vertebrae or ruptured discs. People above the age of 30 are more prone to it and the lower back is the portion that is most commonly affected. Sometimes the pain may be nagging and constant but dull while in other cases, the affected person may experience sudden and sharp pain that lasts only for a few seconds.

Causes

Regardless of what the reason is or how intense the condition, the person will suffer from discomfort and might not be able to carry out day-to-day activities comfortably. This is why it is important to attend to the pain without delay. In some cases, delay in treatment can also lead to aggravation of the condition.

Let's take a look at the different factors that could result in mild or severe back pain and muscle tension:

Simple things like carrying a work bag, laptop bag or a purse on the same shoulder everyday or even sitting on a packed wallet are some of the most common causative factors.

Sometimes we end up sleeping in a strange position which can lead to a severe back ache.

Ruptured or herniated discs can also be caused due to wear and tear that is result of an injury or an accident.

When you lift heavy objects improperly, it can stress your back or pull a muscle resulting in pain.

People lead very busy lives which causes a lot of stress in the body which in turn leads to backaches as the muscles tend to spasm and tighten

Sometimes genetic causes lead to this kind of problem and arthritis can be a cause.

Narrowing-down of the spinal cord can result in a stressed back.

Curved spine or scoliosis is another cause, however, this rears its ugly head only post middle age.

With age, there can be a flattening of the discs that are positioned between the vertebrae. This makes them lose their flexibility and leads to a range of problems.

Prevention and Treatment

It is possible to avoid some types of backaches and pains. Regular exercise and a good diet reduce the chances of back injury. It is important to maintain a good posture and you should also try to sleep in a good posture at night. Do not lift heavy objects in an improper manner. If you are suffering from back pain try a hot or cold compress and also take some OTC pain killers like acetaminophen. If the pain persists, consult a doctor.

The Real Causes Of Back Pain And Constipation

The typical symptoms of constipation are: infrequent bowel movements but this varies by every individual, and pain or difficulty when trying to pass stool. Actually it is not common for constipation and lower back pain to be linked, but it really does happen. However, in the majority of cases, the symptoms of constipation are less severe and usually the result of recent binging upon greasy foods and alcohol or perhaps a reaction to a new medication. Generally, constipation passes within a day or two and regularity restored. However, there are times when back pain constipation occur at the same time and thus probably linked. In such cases, the constipation is probably not the result of some short term problem and will not go away on its own. Back pain and constipation commonly linked due to fecal impaction.

The appearance of abdominal cramps with constipation problem will show at least a mild fecal impaction and this form where your large intestines and rectum meet (a narrow passage in the gastrointestinal tract where it is easy for blockages to form.) Once a blockage forms, it will be impossible for solid waste to get beyond that point and will therefore cause a build-up of feces and the build-up causes by the fecal impaction will eventually begin to exert pressure upon your abdomen and eventually the lower back as well. In some cases this can cause a serious amount of pain and discomfort. Therefore, the longer the fecal impaction blocks feces from evacuation, the more intense your back pain constipation will become until it can be released by a bowel movement.

Even milder fecal impactions are hard to treat with laxatives as the feces will tend to cling to the sides of the intestines, rectum and colon.

Even milder fecal impactions are difficult to treat with laxatives as the feces will tend to cling to the sides of the intestines, rectum, and colon. Laxatives will in fact help lessen your back pain and constipation, but it is likely another blockage will form soon unless all the feces is purged from the gastrointestinal tract including the feces clinging to the walls. If the feces is not removed, both the back pain and constipation will return as soon as another fecal impaction forms.

Probably enemas are more effective than laxatives when treating blockages caused by fecal impaction because they can cleanse further up into the gastrointestinal tract. Unfortunately, their effectiveness tends to be limited to the bottom part of the colon but they do cleanse the walls as well so they remain more effective than laxatives when relieving back pain constipation.

Back pain constipation is caused by a fecal impaction which has created a blockage within your bowels. The blockage must be eradicated and a colon cleanser can do exactly that. A colon cleanse can be self-administered and will take away the blockage and the feces clinging to the walls so that chances of future back pain constipation problems are greatly reduced. However, be sure to purchase a colon cleanse product made with all natural ingredients because products made with synthetic ingredients can lead to serious side effects. Once the fecal impaction has been removed and the back pain constipation removed, be sure to periodically use an all natural colon cleanser product to keep the gastrointestinal tract clean and back pain constipation problems at bay.

Causes Of Back Pain Bulging Disc

What is it?

A bulging disc in the spine is a disc that extrudes into the spinal canal. It is also referred to as slipped disc.

How it causes pain:

As a disc degenerates, it can herniate (the inner core extrudes) back into the spinal canal. In the lumbar area, this can cause pain to radiate all the way down the leg into the foot. In the area of the cervical spine, the pain would radiate from the neck down the arm, to the fingers. Approximately 90% of bulges and herniations occur in the lumbar area of the spine.

Can it be treated?

Yes, the inflammation of tissue and resulting pain associated with a bulging disc can be treated by a specialized procedure without having to endure open back surgery. This is a very common source of pain and many patients with bulging discs, can be treated with the AccuraScope Procedure.

How it can be treated:

With the AccuraScope Discectomy and Neural Decompression, specially trained physicians can visualize these sources of pain using the endoscope, and then shrink the herniation or bulge with the use of a laser and various other tools. The disc is also sealed by the laser, which greatly reduces the risk of a future herniation at the repaired site.

Lower Back Pain Causes - An Overview

No one is exempted from lower back pain. Everyone, at particular instances in his or her existence, would undergo some measure of back pain. Back pain may come in varying levels for numerous individuals and while some may only have brief moments of back pain, others would have to endure this extremely distressing and unbearable situation for the majority of their lives. As many lower back pain persons have come to understand, it is through familiarity of this disease process that one could learn how to cope with it.

Information about lower back pain can be seen in this internet site, certain disease circumstances that may manifest this as a symptom or symptoms, diagnostic steps, treatments, back care tips, and preventive measures. Of course, this site should not be utilized to substitute for the experienced viewpoints of doctors and other health professionals. But, perhaps, it would guide and entice lower back pain sufferers to look for health-related attention so that they could investigate with their medical doctors the numerous treatment options that are accessible.

Overview. Lower back pain afflicts millions of individuals all across the planet. During their lifetime, around 90% of Americans may have experienced some sort of lower pack trouble. Around 50% of these would have had a single occurrence of debilitating soreness that resulted in decrease of valuable work hours and profits. Various levels of lower back pains also give difficulties to 10% of this population for the remainder of their lives.

In terms of anatomy, the back comprises of the upper back and the lower back. From the junction of the neck and shoulder, the upper back goes the entire length of the upper of the torso. When considered in technical terminology, from the 7th cervical vertebra (C-7) at the 1st thoracic vertebra (T-1) going down to the 12th thoracic vertebra (T-12) is regarded as part of the upper back.

As for the lower back, it is made up of the 5 lumbar vertebrae (L-1 to L-5), the sacrum (S-1 to S-3), and the coccyx, also referred to as the tailbone. The spinal cord, the long, thin, and tubular tissue that transmits messages from the brain to the rest of the body, is guarded within the spinal canal of the entire length of the spine. Intervertebral discs or intervertebral fibrocartilage are discs made from cartilage seen between each vertebra to provide moderate activity and works as a ligament keeping the vertebrae together. Through the vertebral foramen to innervate muscles, ligaments, and other areas in the back, pelvis, and abdomen, small branches of the spinal cord can be seen.

Facet joints found in the lumber region are little joints that permits for increased versatility and movement. As a result of the lumber region's physiological build, a good deal of a human body's weight can be reinforced.Lower back pain, how does it occur?

So as to begin, remember that lower back pain is NOT a DISEASE. It is a SYMPTOM, which informs the individual that there is something inappropriate in this region of his or her body.

In the following circumstances, lower back pain may develop: (1) Lower back muscles and tissues are stretched or twisted; (2) Muscle movement that may have caused damage or rips to ligaments; (3) Ripping or disc herniation; (4) Constant rubbing between the joints in the vertebrae from aging disc degeneration; (5) Nerve impingement occuring from sciatica, spinal stenosis, scoliosis, or a tumor; (6) An infection, such as shingles pain or postherpetic neuralgia (caused by Herpes zoster); (7) Kidney or other lower abdominal issues which show as lower back pain due to shared nerve networks (known as "referred pain"); (8) Damage of the facet joints and ligaments due to extreme actions of the vertebrae.

These are merely a few of the fundamental situations that would bring about the progression of lower back pain. For other lower back pain causes, other parts in this site will examine them completely.

Main Causes of Upper Back Pain

Upper back pain can be caused by muscular or joint dysfunction. Each vertebrae of the thoracic spine connects to ribs on either side. This segment of the spine is less mobile than the lumbar and cervical (neck) regions, as its main function is to provide stability and structural support to the vital organs within the ribcage. Since it is not mobile, disc injuries are uncommon in the thoracic spine.

Muscular Causes of Pain

The rhomboid and trapezius muscles in the upper back stretch between the spine and shoulder blades. They are large muscles that provide support to the spine and are used in many daily actions, especially pulling motions. These muscles may become irritated due to either weakness or overuse.

If the large upper back muscles are not strong, they can be strained by simple daily activities. If core muscles in the stomach and lower back are weak, your posture will suffer since the upper body's weight will not be adequately supported. This leads the shoulders to droop and hunch over, pulling on the muscles in the upper back. Proper conditioning of muscles throughout the back and core is necessary to avoid and correct this type of muscular pain. If you have upper back pain, a physical therapist may be needed to instruct you on the types of exercise that will benefit you.

Upper back muscles can become strained by overuse. Jobs that require repetitive arm motions can overtax your muscles, as can rigorous sports like rowing. Muscles that are chronically tense may develop trigger points, dense knots that form in the tissue surrounding the muscle called myofascia. These knots cause localized pain and make it difficult for muscles to relax. They can also refer pain to other parts of the body by pressing on nerves. Trigger points and overuse injuries are best treated with massage therapy. Deep tissue and trigger point massage will force your muscles to relax. Physical therapy may be needed to correct poor body mechanics that cause injuries.

Joint Causes of Pain

Thoracic vertebrae each have a number of joints: two on each side that link to other vertebrae called facet joints and one on each side that connects the vertebra to a rib, called costovertebral joints. Unlike the rest of the body's joints, thoracic joints usually do not wear down due to the normal aging process, since the area is very stable. There are other situations that can cause joint dysfunction in the upper back.

Facet and costovertebral joint dysfunction generally occur in the thoracic spine due to poor body mechanics. Excessive bending, twisting and lifting can stress the joints, damaging the strong connective tissue that comprises joints. The joints can become inflamed and stiff, limiting range of motion of the shoulder and causing upper back pain. Costovertebral joint dysfunction can cause pain both in the back and the ribcage.

Chiropractic manipulation is considered the best conservative treatment for thoracic joint dysfunction. Chiropractors work to restore range of motion and joint alignment.

There are a number of conservative treatments for upper back pain management. Massage, chiropractic care and physical therapy can help to reduce muscular pain and resolve joint dysfunction. Make sure you are performing your daily tasks with proper body mechanics and practicing good posture; these will help to prevent upper back pain in the future.
